I’ve known since the media started making noises about it that straw purchases of guns were not anywhere near the main source of supply of firearms to the Mexican drug cartels. The numbers of weapons we’re talking about is simply too great to have been supplied in that way. And also, many of the weapons I saw on TV cannot be purchased in your average gun store in the U.S. So I knew that our government and the news media were misrepresenting the facts.
Obama and the anti-gun crowd would have you believe that most of the guns came from gun stores near the border. This is a bald faced lie, and they know it. Yes, I just called Obama a liar, and in this case it is justifiable – and provable.
Now comes news that one of the cartel’s biggest suppliers is – the U.S. Government! From the article:
“many of these weapons are getting to Mexico via the U.S. government. Tens of thousands of firearms and explosives are sold legally through the U.S. State Department to the Mexican government. These weapons are then funneled to the traffickers and cartels by corrupt officials within the Mexico Ministry of Defense and local and state police departments.”
There’s much more at the article.
This entire incident reveals clearly this administration’s bias against private gun ownership in the United States. They focused on the few straw purchases at gun stores, and ignored the obvious facts (which they were aware of) that A) the number of weapons made it impossible for straw purchases to be the main supply, B) the type of weapons frequently could not be purchased in U.S. gun stores, and C) they already knew where the weapons were coming from.
Instead, they pursued a media campaign against gun stores and the rights of Americans to defend themselves, with the clear intent (IMHO) of making honest gun stores appear to be shady and greedy and thus less than reputable. Obama has tarnished the reputation of many an honest gun dealer along the border with Mexico.
You see, the anti-gun crowd want to associate crime, war, drugs, dishonesty, and in fact any negative connotation they can come up with, to guns. It’s part of their drive to eventually eliminate private sales and ownership of guns. They take the long view; they use propaganda as one of their tools. I don’t know about you, but I hate being manipulated in this way – I hate it with a passion. Distorting the truth to control how people think! How obscene!
Short rant: One fast way to completely lose my trust is to attempt to manipulate me in this way. Honest people do not try such manipulation, nor do they shade the truth or distort the facts. If a person (or entity, i.e. this administration) lies to you once, then you can expect them to lie to you again; their word is worth nothing, and you cannot ever trust them again.
I’m here to tell you that guns are useful tools – and that is all they are. But they are important tools – people like to hunt. People like them for sport. They are essential for self defense – no other available technology can do what guns can do. And we have the right to own and use them in appropriate circumstances. As the founders recognized, in the Second Amendment.
