Will the Federal Government Shut Down?

The government may shut down if the Democrats and Republicans don’t reach a compromise on the budget.

Now, seriously, is this a bad thing? After all < Snort! Cough! >, our biggest single problem is the massive overspending the government has been doing.

Maybe if the federal government shut down for a while, the State governments could step up and do most of the governing – as the Founders intended….

I said all that in jest, of course, but… continuing the thought…

If the federal government were to mysteriously disappear one day, the United States is probably the only nation on the planet that really could restart from scratch and keep right on going without missing a beat. The States were originally intended to do all governing except on issues where the States needed a united front to present to other nations. That is why there are State governments – the States were originally independent entities who came together as allies. Ever since, the Federal government has assumed more and more control, a bit at a time. But, the States could pick up the slack very quickly; all we would need to do is, using the Constitution, reestablish national diplomatic and military functions – the original purpose of the Federal government.

I may have to write a novel. This is intriguing.

Now, that’s what happens when you wake up at 2:30 AM and get to playing around with ideas… back to bed for me!

    How much could we save for everyday they shut down? Enough to balance the budget if they stayed shut down until 2012?

      Hi, Loopyloo305;

      I don’t know realistically, but I suppose it would save $3.7 trillion dollars this year alone. That’s the size of Obama’s budget request.

    It would be worth it, just to keep them from adding new rules and regulations on to us. The cost of food and gas is getting harder and harder to come up with. Don’t know how many people will be able to survive if it keeps getting higher. Perhaps that is their idea, kill us all off, then they would have the country all to themselves. Depressing mood, tonight,
    Never thought I would see this great country being destroyed before my very eyes.

    I do have faith that we can restore it, though. You are so right about this country being the only one with the ability to restore. Our founders were very blessed with the ability to see what could be. It would make a very interesting book. I have always loved books that explore the possibilities of the future and alternate realities. It almost feels as if were a living in one.

    One thing I would like to see in this scenario is the Bill of Rights incorporated into every state’s constitutions. Some states could very well rule away the people’s rights without hindrance from their constitutions.

    • popgun says:

      You know, Crotalus, that’s a great idea. And while we’re at it, we could remove all ambiguity about the Second Amendment.

      Of course, each state would individually have to vote for these changes.

    If the Government would shutdown then it would save us a lot of money, I just wish the I.R.S. would shutdown as well so we wouldn’t have to pay taxes for awhile… In fact i think that the I.R.S. should be investigated as well, if they collect Billions if not Trillions of dollars every year where does all that money go??? Maybe the federal courts needs to investigate this situation and find out where our money is going to and what for!!
