Quote From the Pulpwood Days

When I was a teenager, my neighbor and I made summer money by cutting pulpwood. We used a boom-truck with a home-made winch to load the wood on the truck. An often-heard quote:

Ok, set it down!” (normal tone of voice)

(it’s on my foot!)

Pick it up, Pick it up, Pick it up!!!” (high pitched tone of voice).

This happened at least once a day.

    Please don’t laugh. . . but what is a boom-truck?

    Hi, Ali;
    Back in the day, pulp-wood trucks were usually home-built rigs based on a 2 or 3 ton commercial truck frame. On the back were built one or two steel frames for stacking wood, kind of like a wood-rack for firewood, only bigger. The wood was cut to 5′-2″ lengths and stacked cross-ways on the truck. Usually in between these racks was a column with a rotating boom on it, through which a cable from a winch was run. This was used as a crane; one operator would man the winch controls. The other would drag the cable out to wrap around some pre-cut pieces of wood, and the winch would drag the wood back to the truck, then up in the air for stacking. A third man would stack it, or if there were only two men, the second man would climb up on the truck to stack it. It actually is pretty dangerous work, so safety was always a major consideration. I may blog some more about this period when I have time.

    Have a nice day!

    I grew up in a logging town. Half of my graduating class still works the mills.

    Laughed out loud at that. Thanks for sharing.
