We Need a New Law

January 31, 2009

We need a new law. This law should apply to any elected or appointed position.

  • Make it illegal to work in government if you’ve ever been caught cheating at taxes, or if you’ve ever committed a felony of any sort.
  • It should also cause immediate loss of your position in the government, if you are convicted while in office.
  • And it should require that penalties for such crimes assessed be identical to what would be assessed against an ordinary citizen.

You’d think we would already have such a law, but – oh, wait! – our congress-critters would have to pass it, wouldn’t they? Not likely that’s going to happen! Snort.

Besides, half of them would be out of a job if such a law was passed. Not a bad thing, now that I think about it.

It’s pretty bad when the phrase ‘organized crime’ makes you think of Washington…

Gun Safety

January 30, 2009

Ann Coulter reports:

In a comprehensive study of all public multiple shooting incidents in America between 1977 and 1999, economists John Lott and Bill Landes found that the only public policy that reduced both the incidence and casualties of such shootings were concealed-carry laws. Not only are there 60 percent fewer gun massacres after states adopt concealed-carry laws, but the death and injury rate of such rampages are reduced by 80 percent.

Just say’in.

Do I Want Obama to Succeed?

January 29, 2009

I believe it was Rush Limbaugh that raised a stink because he said he wanted President Obama to fail. The Democrats got in a tizzy, as I recall, calling him un-American for this. But how many of them wanted Bush to fail when he was president? And how can they expect anybody to support someone who is diametrically opposed to everything you believe in?

So this got me to thinking. How do I feel about that, exactly?

Well, I guess I’d just have to break it down by issue. I say that, because, just like anybody else, there are things I like about Obama (though precious few), and things i don’t like. If we were talking about a vote, as we were a couple of months ago, some of them are show stoppers for me. Now, of course, the situation has changed. It’s not yes/no overall; so I’m free to pick issues at which I want him to succeed or fail.

So, here goes:

Obama is pro abortion and baby murder. This is so morally repugnant to me that I cannot support him in that. So I hope his efforts to make abortion legal everywhere and in all ways totally fails.

In his campaign, Obama claimed to support the Second Amendment, but his voting record and his stated policy on the www.whitehouse.gov website completely contradicts this. The fact that his policy was not explicitly defined during his campaign infuriates me; I feel that he tried to mislead us all. I most certainly hope he fails at any efforts he or the Democrats make to increase any regulation or law that would erode my right to bear arms. So I hope he fails in his stated goals, there.

Regarding this current “stimulus” package: first , I am not an economist. But I do know this; there are a great many provisions in that bill that have nothing whatever to do with stimulating the economy. If the Democrats were “playing fair” and serving the mandate to do what should be done to get the economy rolling again, NONE of that extra crap would be in the bill. There should not be ANYTHING in that bill that does not DIRECTLY act to stimulate the economy. And while Pelosi & Reed and their cronies are the authors, Obama is the cheerleader. So I hope Obama fails to get this so-called stimulus passed. As a footnote, this is a direct measure of the morality of the people now in the majority in congress.

Regarding foreign policy – I hope Obama succeeds in this. As long as he does not do so by giving away the farm, or by trying to appease nations or terrorist organizations that don’t like us. And he had best not even think about abandoning Israel. So I hope Obama succeeds at foreign policy, but he has to do it in such a way that doesn’t betray our friends, or benefit our enemies, or cost us in other ways. How Obama approaches this remains to be seen, but I was not impressed by what he’s done so far, with his cozy little chat on Al-Arabiya TV in Dubai. I think he set the wrong tone. But we’ll see. He’s not off to a great start. Trying to get those people to ‘like’ us will not only fail, but will make us appear weak, which will cause problems later.

War: I never want our military to lose any conflict. To the extent that he is Commander In Chief, I hope Obama succeeds in every conflict. I hope he does not waste the lives of the people under his command. So success here is not only winning the conflict; other factors would have to be evaluated to rule Obama a success at this. So I hope he succeeds – but he has zero experience, and I don’t have much hope.

And I could keep going for quite a while.

In short, I hope Obama succeeds at those policies that I support; and fails at those I don’t.

As far as personally, I wish Obama all the best. But there is no way I can support all his policies, because many of his viewpoints are quite divergent from my own.

Lunch Today with my Granddaughter

January 28, 2009

It was a short lunch, but so much fun -

When my son was in from New York, he started trying to teach my 3 year old granddaughter to wink. He’s gone back to NYC, but she’s still trying.

Watching a three year old try to wink is more fun then I would have believed possible.

Amazing.

Pelosi and the Stimulus

January 27, 2009

Nancy Pelosi thinks the bailout should include money for birth control funding. Because babies are a drag on the economy. Not a direct quote, but that’s what she said. She’s radically pro-abortion, as well.

Nancy Polosi has five children and six grandchildren. Given this, she has an odd view of children, what with them being a drag on the economy, and everything.

Fortunately, Obama recognized political suicide when he saw it, and got this funding dropped from the “stimulus” package. For once, good for Obama.

This sad little (true) story demonstrates that many of the Democrats see this “stimulus” bill as a means of funding every pet project they’ve had in the hopper for years. From where I sit it looks as if they have not evaluated each item in the bill for whether it helps the economy; the criteria seems to be if it furthers the Democratic secular-progressive agenda.

The great majority of the funding in this bill will not even enter the economy for more than a year.

And, oddly enough, they are in a frantic blinding hurry to get it passed. I wonder why they’re in such a hurry? There are two possible reasons: One is if there is something in that bill that will IMMEDIATELY jolt the economy back on track; the other reason would be if they are trying to get it passed before anybody that could stop them gets a chance to do so.

My personal feeling is that it is the latter. I’ve been watching all this stimulus hoopla go by, and I trust these people less and less. The Democratic congress-critters seem to be drunk with spending, while we the people are tightening our belts.

Tanner

January 23, 2009

Yesterday, January 22, 2009, Tanner was born, my second grandchild. Everything went perfectly, and Tanner and his mother (and father) are healthy and happy as of last night.

IMG_0167.JPG

There is always wonder at the birth of a child; a new person coming into the world. This one in particular will carry on the family name; he’s the only boy in his generation of this branch of our family. I hope that he and his sister both grow up to be good in every way; intelligent, strong, healthy, wise, and rich in the love of God.

For me personally, and my wife, this is a really big event, for lots of reasons. This may or may not be our last grandchild, for one thing. He is someone we can watch grow up, if we are given that much time. When you get right down to it, a grandchild gives an older person one more reason to keep on going for as long as possible. Watching a life unfold… this is the greatest show on earth!

Did Anybody Notice??

Did anybody notice that there were not any suicide bombers at President Obama’s inauguration?

That’s because of President Bush’s policies…

Well, THAT Didn’t Take Long…

January 20, 2009

Before he was elected, Obama stated “I’m not going to take away your guns.” and “I believe in the Second Amendment. I believe in people’s lawful right to bear arms.”

I thought he was a liar, and I was right. If he had said then what he is saying now, he probably would not have been elected. I am seriously ticked about this.

Thanks to the Lady Tam, for the heads-up.

Within a few minutes of Obama’s inauguration, when the Presidential website was changed over to Obama’s, this appeared:

Address Gun Violence in Cities: Obama and Biden would repeal the Tiahrt Amendment, which restricts the ability of local law enforcement to access important gun trace information, and give police officers across the nation the tools they need to solve gun crimes and fight the illegal arms trade. Obama and Biden also favor commonsense measures that respect the Second Amendment rights of gun owners, while keeping guns away from children and from criminals. They support closing the gun show loophole and making guns in this country childproof. They also support making the expired federal Assault Weapons Ban permanent.

All these things are intended to chip away at our rights to own firearms. At the same time, they have very little effect on reducing crime. They all only affect law-abiding gun owners. Crooks won’t even notice any such laws.

The Tiahrt amendment prevents unnecessary and useless government invasion of gun-owners’ privacy.

Assault Weapons Ban – doesn’t do any good, to speak of. Banning all so-called assault weapons is pointless when they really are not a problem. From Gun Facts:

Nationally, “assault weapons” were used in 1.4% of crimes involving firearms and 0.25% of all violent crime before the enactment of any national or state “assault weapons” ban. In many major urban areas (San Antonio, Mobile, Nashville, etc.) and some entire states (Maryland, New Jersey, etc.) the rate is less than 0.1%

As far as the “gun show loophole”, what Obama has in mind would make it impossible for a law-abiding citizen to sell a firearm to another law-abiding citizen without the government’s blessing. I have owned several firearms and sold several firearms to people I knew to be reliable. I used a standard bill-of-sale form. None of these guns is outside the control of a law-abiding citizen. Why should the government get in my business?

The part about keeping guns away from children – I do that already, thank you very much. I don’t need the government mandating locks or telling me that I can’t have an assembled, ready-to-fire gun within reach at all times. All such efforts are actually designed to either render guns unusable in a reasonable amount of time for self defense, or to increase the cost of the firearm beyond reason.

In short, everything Obama says he wants to do is either unnecessary, or pointless, or designed to obstruct my freedom to own firearms of one type or another, or drive up the cost of guns so fewer people will have them.

Anybody that does these things is not my friend.

Why, exactly, do the Democrats and the liberals want us all to be unarmed?? What are they afraid of?

Time to start writing all my congress-critters to see if I can promote heading off some of this, well, wrong-headed law-making. I hope you will, too.
